| Subject: Cabin Crew Uniform Sun Sep 20, 2009 10:36 am | |
| Garuda Indonesia Cabin Crew Uniforms Through the Years Airline cabin crew members are in a unique profession. On the one hand, they serve as hosts and hostesses on behalf of the airline, providing service to the passengers. At the same time, they are responsible for ensuring the passengers, safety and comfort during the flight. Before they fly, prospective cabin crew members undergo six months of pre-flight training, including in-flight service simulation, flight safety, knowledge about first aid and law, service aspects, social etiquette, and Poise and Grace. Their future training is determined by the course of their careers as cabin crew members. Helen E. McLaughlin, in her book ‘Footsteps in The Sky’ (1994), states that the cabin crew profession emerged from the need for on-board medical personnel during World Wars I and II, when many injured troops were transported by air and needed care during the flights. In their work, the cabin crew wears special uniforms. The first Garuda Indonesia cabin crew uniform had a very military look, with military-style caps (which folded) and clothing made of drill The uniform comprised a white blouse and a skirt, with a cream-colored 1940s-style cap. This uniform was used into the 1970s. The next uniform used was orange, matching the livery (logo and colour scheme) of the Garuda Indonesia aircraft at that time. This uniform underwent various changes and adjustments to keep up with the current fashion trends. The variations included a cream-coloured blouse with an orange sheath skirt and a round hat; then two different uniforms were used concurrently, one primarily cream and the other mainly orange; then a uniform with a cream background with a light blue and light yellow zigzag pattern. This series of uniforms was used until 1986. In 1986, the Garuda Indonesia aircraft livery was changed to dark blue, and the cabin crew uniforms changed to match this new colour scheme. This basic uniform is still in use. The accompanying pictures should take long-time Garuda Indonesia passengers on a trip down memory lane. | |
